The Future of Construction Management Technology
With the construction industry changing every day, how do supervisors keep up?
As technology advances, there are more and more changes in many fields of work to implement the newest innovative pieces of equipment. This has had a huge impact on the construction management field and every day there are exciting new changes that make the way we work much, much easier. The main issues this article focuses on are changes in Project Management Software, Field Productivity, Time Tracking, Communication, and Computer Imaging Tools. These innovations can be quite important to the field because it streamlines production, which in turn pays of by reducing the burden of time restraints.
One innovation of the construction management field is the introduction of Building Information Modeling, or BIM. Rather than the old fashion way of using blueprints and pens, BIM has created an outlet for three dimensional data input. This allows the user to see how a building will be built before moving any physical resources. This is a great improvement for the industry because it minimizes human error and allows for supervisors to see specific building plans anywhere they go.
Advances in visual tools in construction are very evident. Fifty years ago there were no civilian-available drones or live video feeds of construction sites. All they had was camera, and I guess they had to use helicopters and planes for aerial shots. With the technology of today, we can now not only see progress of construction in photos, we can watch the site from any angle we please. And with advances in VR technology, we can do hands-on training without having to go out in the field. This may not be the most practical as VR and AR are not the same as holding the tools you will use at a real project, but I could see it being useful in the development of supervisors in training.
